This work was motivated by my concern for the diminishing extent of the earth’s polar ice caps. Using data on the daily extent of sea ice from the National Snow & Ice Data Center as my source material, I sought to explore in weaving the shape of the ‘lost ice’ over the course of a year in the Arctic. The boundary between water and ice shifts and moves as the year unfolds, but every day of this recent year (2016) experienced a loss of ice compared with the corresponding long run average. This can be seen in the margin of blue water running the whole length of the piece. As part of a commitment to make my creative practice as gently sustainable as I can, this piece is woven exclusively with organic yarns, mill ends and ‘found’ yarns.
