Pics to Picks
Today is P2P2 Big Reveal Day so it is time for a worldwide round of applause and appreciation for Meg, who has organised the whole thing with tremendous generosity and grace. I have not only enjoyed my own project, but have been avidly following the progress of the other participants. My set of pictures came from Meg. Here’s a reminder of the first one I chose to work with (you can see the whole set here if you want a refresher). My reason... Read More
a bit of plain weave
I thought I might incorporate the triangle fabric into a bag, so I’ve started on a warp-faced plain weave strap to go with it. The honeycomb is going well, and this is the last picture I’m going to show you before the Big Reveal. I’m such a lazy weaver that I wasn’t looking forward to using two shuttles (blue weft for the interior of the cells, light beige weft for the floats) but I’m finding a rhythm nonetheless. It’s... ready to wind
I’ve put off planning my official P2P2 warp (as opposed to the unofficial triangles) because I needed to use my laptop to work out and record the details, and sometimes I just don’t want to go near it. If I boot up, it’s odds on I’ll get sucked into the email vortex and gradually disappear under a dozen or more things that people are wanting me to do so that I never get close to the loom at all. 99% of these things will come... P2P2 update
I had quite forgotten that I haven’t posted any pictures of my 12-shaft honeycomb sample. It certainly has a waffly look about it. However, I don’t like it as much as the 8-shaft version. The cells are nice and deep, but the larger size gives less sense of movement. And to be honest it wasn’t very comfortable to weave. The lifting sequence is 3 shafts, then 5, then 7 and finally 9 shafts — and back again. I added a basketweave... Read More
that’s better
Hooray for getting to test the effect of sunshine on mood — it definitely worked today! I went off to work in the university library, not because I needed access to any books, but because I wanted the 15 minute walk on a sunny morning. And I got the bonus of a longer walk back because it is steeply uphill… Then this afternoon I worked in the living room beside an open window as the cats snuck in and out, sunning themselves alternately... of floats
My P2P2 sample warp looks a bit like a riot on the banks of the Ganges, but there is method in’t I promise. I’m trying a whole assortment of stripes so that I can see what happens when floats of one colour surround a cell of another colour. However, I started with a pre-sample (yes, I’m afraid so, neki desu!) because I wanted to find out how the two surfaces of Brighton honeycomb differ in practice. Well, now I know. On the face... least liked, most looked at
So I have been busy with my looking and an idea has begun to take shape. The picture I instinctively liked the least was this one, of the people bathing in the Ganges at the Varanasi ghats. Why don’t I like it? Well, mainly because I am not very keen on the colours (although they are not quite as mustard-toned as that scan makes them appear). It is also too busy for my taste. The detail which would be engaging and inviting in a mural seems... Read More
brain ache
It’s not a bright idea to try and get to grips with a new weave structure on a Sunday night. It is especially not a good idea to beat yourself over the head with a weaving book for an hour before thinking that it might be a good idea to check online for any errata… Guess what. On the whole I’m rather relieved that it isn’t just me losing the plot, but I wish I’d thought of it slightly before I went cross-eyed with exhausted... Read More
looking
Some of the P2P2 participants have already made adventurous beginnings — you can see a chronology of the project if you visit this post on Meg’s blog — but I am still acclimatising. In order to facilitate that acclimatisation I have stuck the pictures on the wall above my desk. This way I can spend a few minutes just looking every now and then throughout the day. I have developed favourites and less-favourites, and have been reminded... Read More
post!
It’s a horrible day. As if a Monday morning wasn’t a stressful enough event in itself, this one brought the additional horrors of howling gales and driving rain. The cats spent much of it beating each other up (a popular bad weather alternative to going outdoors) but have now retired to bed. I rather fancy that option myself. It’s now lunchtime and I believe I do detect a brightening of the sky, although the hanging bird feeders... Read More
